About this worksheet
Third graders take the step from reading clocks to the nearest five minutes to reading them to the exact minute. This third-grade worksheet shows twelve analog clocks with tick marks for every minute. Students write each time in digital form, such as 4:37. None of the times land on a multiple of five, so every clock asks students to count the small minute marks past the nearest numeral.
Reading the hour hand carefully matters too. At 2:52, the hour hand is almost on the 3, but the hour is still 2. Times like this help students learn that the hour hand moves slowly between numbers all hour long.
How to use it: start by naming the hour from the short hand. Then find the last numeral the long hand passed, count by fives to that numeral, and count on by ones. Saying "forty-five, forty-six, forty-seven" while pointing to each mark keeps the count accurate. A real clock or a paper plate clock helps students who need to move the hands themselves. If an answer is one hour off, check which numeral the hour hand has passed.
The answer key lists every time. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 3.MD.A.1 (tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes). Ten versions give plenty of practice, and it leads naturally into our Elapsed Time worksheet. Use our Telling Time to 5 Minutes worksheet first if needed.
