About this worksheet

Multiplying a two-digit number by another two-digit number is a major fourth-grade milestone. Students multiply by the ones digit, multiply by the tens digit, and add the two partial products. This fourth-grade worksheet gives sixteen vertical problems such as 47 × 36. No factor is a multiple of ten, so every problem needs both partial products, and each box has room to show the work.

Understanding why the second partial product ends in zero is the key idea. When students multiply 47 by the 3 in 36, they are really multiplying by 30. Students who skip that idea often line up partial products in the wrong place.

How to use it: start with an area model. Break each factor into tens and ones, draw a rectangle with four parts, and add the four small products. Then show how the standard algorithm groups those same parts into two rows. Estimating first, such as 50 × 40 = 2,000, helps students catch answers that are far off. Graph paper keeps the columns straight.

The separate answer-key PDF lists every product in order. If an answer is much too small, the student probably forgot the zero in the second partial product. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.5 (multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value). Try it after our Multi-Digit Multiplication worksheet, which covers one-digit multipliers.
