About this worksheet

Long division brings together many skills at once: multiplication facts, subtraction, place value, and careful organization. This fourth-grade worksheet gives twelve problems that divide three- and four-digit numbers by a one-digit divisor from 2 to 9. Some problems divide evenly, and others leave a remainder, which students record with an "R" (for example, 157 R3). Each problem is drawn in the standard long-division format with plenty of work space below.

How to use it: many families use the memory phrase "Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down" to remember the repeating steps. Encourage your child to estimate first; for 1,284 ÷ 6, knowing that 6 × 200 = 1,200 tells them the answer is a little more than 200. Remind them that each remainder must be smaller than the divisor; if it isn't, the quotient digit should be larger. Graph paper or turning lined paper sideways helps keep digits in the correct columns.

The answer key shows each quotient and remainder. Students can check their own work by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and adding the remainder; the result should equal the original number. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.6 (find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors).
