About this worksheet

Skip counting is a shortcut that supports mental math, counting money, telling time, and later multiplication. This second-grade worksheet gives twelve number sequences: four that count by 5s, four that count by 10s, and four that count by 100s. Each sequence has seven numbers, and three of them are missing. Children figure out the pattern and fill in the blanks. All numbers stay within 1,000, and the sequences start at different places, not just at zero.

Starting from numbers like 215 or 680 is what makes this worksheet a real challenge. Children have to notice which digit is changing. When counting by 10s, the tens digit goes up by one each time and the ones digit stays the same, until the tens roll over into the next hundred. When counting by 100s, only the hundreds digit changes.

How to use it: have your child read each row aloud, including the blanks, and say what number goes in each one. Ask, "Which digit is changing? Which digits stay the same?" A hundred chart works well for counting by 5s and 10s, and base-ten blocks can show what happens when ten tens become a hundred. If your child gets stuck, they can check their answer by counting from the number before the blank.

The answer key lists every missing number. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 2.NBT.A.2 (count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s).
