About this worksheet

Counting money combines skip counting, addition, and real-life problem solving. In this second-grade worksheet, children find the total value of eight groups of U.S. coins: quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Each coin is drawn as a simple labeled circle that shows its name and value, and the circles are sized like the real coins: the dime is the smallest and the quarter is the largest. Every total is less than one dollar, and children write the answer using the cent sign.

How to use it: coins in each group are arranged from greatest to least value, which models the best counting strategy. Start with the quarters (25, 50, 75), then count on by tens for dimes, by fives for nickels, and by ones for pennies. For example, one quarter, two dimes, and three pennies is 25, 35, 45, 46, 47, 48 cents. Remind children that a coin's size does not tell its value; a dime is smaller than a penny but worth ten times as much. Practicing with real coins from a jar or wallet makes this skill stick.

The answer key lists the total for each group. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 2.MD.C.8 (solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately). As an extension, ask your child to show the same amount using a different set of coins.
