About this worksheet

Fifth graders learn that multiplying fractions means finding a part of a part, or scaling a quantity. This fifth-grade worksheet gives fifteen multiplication problems. Some multiply two fractions, such as 2/3 × 3/4. Others multiply a fraction by a whole number, such as 3/5 × 4. Students write each product in simplest form, including whole-number answers when the denominator divides evenly.

A reliable method is to multiply numerators together and denominators together, then simplify. Canceling common factors before multiplying can make the arithmetic easier. Area models and fraction strips help students see why 1/2 × 1/3 equals 1/6.

How to use it: have students rewrite whole numbers as fractions over 1 when needed. Estimate first: is the product less than or greater than one of the factors? After multiplying, check that the answer is in simplest form. If a product is wrong by a factor of the denominator, the student may have added instead of multiplied.

The answer key lists every simplified product. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 5.NF.B.4 (apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction). It builds on our Adding Fractions With Unlike Denominators worksheet and prepares students for dividing fractions.
