About this worksheet

Fifth graders begin dividing fractions with unit fractions, which have a numerator of 1. This fifth-grade worksheet gives twelve problems of two kinds. Some divide a unit fraction by a whole number, such as 1/3 ÷ 4, which means sharing one third equally among four groups. Others divide a whole number by a unit fraction, such as 5 ÷ 1/2, which asks how many halves fit in five wholes. Students write each answer as a fraction or a whole number.

Each sheet has six of each kind, mixed on the page, so students think about meaning instead of following one pattern. Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number makes a smaller unit fraction. Dividing a whole number by a unit fraction makes a larger whole number.

How to use it: draw a quick picture for the first few problems. For 1/3 ÷ 4, split a bar into thirds, then split one third into four equal pieces; each piece is 1/12 of the bar. For 5 ÷ 1/2, draw five wholes and count the halves. Students can check with multiplication: 1/12 × 4 should equal 1/3, and 10 × 1/2 should equal 5.

The answer key lists every quotient. This worksheet supports Common Core standards 5.NF.B.7.a (interpret division of a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number, and compute such quotients) and 5.NF.B.7.b (interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients).
