About this worksheet

This fifth-grade worksheet gives practice multiplying a decimal by a whole number, such as 3.45 × 6. All 20 problems use a decimal written to the hundredths place and a one-digit whole number from 2 to 9. Many of these situations come up in everyday life, like finding the cost of several items that each cost the same amount.

How to use it: one reliable method is to multiply as if there were no decimal point (345 × 6 = 2,070), then place the decimal point so the product has the same number of decimal places as the decimal factor. Because 3.45 has two decimal places, the product is 20.70. Encourage students to estimate first to make sure the decimal is in a sensible place: 3.45 is about 3.5, and 3.5 × 6 = 21, so 20.70 makes sense while 2.07 or 207.0 do not. Thinking in money (6 items at $3.45 each) is another helpful check. The answer key writes every product to the hundredths, so students see that 20.70 and 20.7 have the same value.

The answer key lists every product. If an answer has the right digits but the wrong value, the decimal point is probably in the wrong place, and an estimate will help fix it. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 5.NBT.B.7 (add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using strategies based on place value and properties of operations).
