About this worksheet

Subtracting decimals shows up in money, science measurements, and later algebra. This fifth-grade worksheet gives 20 vertical subtraction problems with decimals to the hundredths place. Every number is written with two decimal places so students can focus on lining up place values correctly. Some problems require regrouping across the decimal point, and all answers are non-negative.

The key idea is the same as whole-number subtraction: line up the place values, then subtract from right to left, regrouping when needed. The decimal point drops straight down into the answer. Thinking in cents can help: 5.00 - 2.35 is like five dollars minus two dollars and thirty-five cents.

How to use it: have students rewrite problems with the decimal points clearly aligned before subtracting. Estimating first by rounding to whole numbers or tenths helps catch answers that are far off. If an answer is wrong by a factor of ten, the points were probably not lined up. Graph paper or turning lined paper sideways keeps digits in columns.

The separate answer-key PDF lists every difference to the hundredths. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 5.NBT.B.7 (add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction). It pairs with our Adding Decimals to the Hundredths worksheet for related practice.

All 10 versions

Each version practices the same skill with a fresh set of problems, so children can keep practicing without repeating a page they have already done. Problems are not repeated between versions unless a skill has only a small number of possible problems (for example, the addition facts within 10).
