About this worksheet

A coordinate plane uses two number lines, the x-axis and the y-axis, to give every point an exact address. The address is an ordered pair such as (6, 3): the first number tells how far to move across from zero, and the second tells how far to move up. This fifth-grade worksheet shows a grid numbered from 0 to 10 on both axes, with twelve points labeled A through L. Students write the ordered pair for each point.

Some points sit right on an axis, such as (4, 0) or (0, 8), because those are the points students most often get backward. The points are spread out, so every label is easy to read.

How to use it: teach the phrase "across, then up," or "walk before you climb." Have students put a finger on zero, slide along the x-axis to the point's column, then move up to the point. A common mistake is switching the numbers, so check answers by following each pair from zero. For extra practice, students can choose their own points and give a partner the ordered pairs to plot.

The answer key lists every ordered pair. This worksheet supports Common Core standards 5.G.A.1 (use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system and locate points by their ordered pairs) and 5.G.A.2 (represent problems by graphing points in the first quadrant). It pairs well with our Volume of Rectangular Prisms worksheet for more fifth-grade geometry.
