About this worksheet

A vowel team is two letters that work together to make one vowel sound. In rain and play, ai and ay make the long a sound. In sheep and dream, ee and ea make the long e sound, and in coat, oa makes the long o sound. This first-grade worksheet practices five common vowel teams: ai, ay, ee, ea, and oa.

There are fifteen clues, three for each vowel team, in mixed order. Each clue describes an everyday word, such as "A farm animal with soft wool," and shows the word with its vowel team missing, like sh___p. Children read the clue, choose a team from the box at the top, and write it in the blank. Every word was chosen so that only one team spells a real word in the blank, so the clue and the spelling always agree.

How to use it: read the vowel team box together first and say the sound each team makes. Point out a useful spelling rule: ai usually comes in the middle of a word, while ay usually comes at the end, as in day and clay. Read the clues aloud if needed. After writing the team, have your child read the whole word out loud.

The answer key lists the vowel team and the complete word for every clue. This worksheet supports Common Core standard RF.1.3.c (know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds).
