About this worksheet
Adding a silent e to the end of a short word can change the whole word. Cap becomes cape, hop becomes hope, and kit becomes kite. The e is silent, but it makes the vowel say its name. This first-grade worksheet has two parts. In Part A, children add a silent e to ten short vowel words and write the new long vowel word. In Part B, they read six clues and choose between a short vowel word and its silent e partner, such as hat or hate.
Part B is important because the answer is not always the word with the e. A baby bear is a cub, not a cube, so children have to read both words carefully and think about meaning.
How to use it: read each Part A pair out loud together, first the short word and then the new word, and listen for the vowel changing its sound. Many teachers call the e "magic e" or "bossy e" because it makes the vowel say its name. If a Part B answer is wrong, read both choices in the clue sentence and ask which one makes sense.
The answer key lists every word. This worksheet supports Common Core standard RF.1.3.c (know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds). Use it after our Short Vowel CVC Words worksheet, and pair it with our Beginning Blends worksheet for more first-grade phonics.
