About this worksheet

Finding 10 more or 10 less than a number is a big step in understanding place value. When you add or take away ten, only the tens digit changes: 10 more than 47 is 57, and 10 less than 47 is 37. First graders learn to do this in their heads, without counting by ones. This first-grade worksheet gives sixteen two-digit numbers from 20 to 89.

Each number sits in the middle of a row of three boxes. Children write the number that is 10 less in the box on the left and the number that is 10 more in the box on the right. The ten versions use every number from 20 to 89 before any number repeats.

How to use it: show the idea with base-ten blocks or bundles of ten straws. Build 47 as four tens and seven ones, then add one more ten and count the tens again. Take a ten away to show 37. A hundred chart is another helpful tool: moving down one row is 10 more, and moving up one row is 10 less. Ask your child, "Which digit changed? Which digit stayed the same?" Once the pattern is clear, challenge your child to explain why the ones stay the same.

The answer key shows each full row, with 10 less, the number, and 10 more. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 1.NBT.C.5 (given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count).
