About this worksheet
This first-grade reading comprehension worksheet features "The Lost Mitten," an original short story about a girl named Lila who loses one red mitten at recess and looks for it with a friend. The passage is written in short sentences with mostly familiar words, and it is followed by four multiple-choice questions and one short written response. First graders practice finding details in a story, noticing a character's feelings, and saying what happened in order.
The questions ask where Lila lost the mitten, who helped her look, how she felt when she found it, what she learned, and why sharing a mitten with a friend was kind. Each multiple-choice question can be answered by looking back at the text, which builds the habit of using evidence instead of guessing.
How to use it: read the story aloud together the first time, or let your child read it while you listen. Then reread before answering. Encourage your child to point to the sentence that proves each answer. For the written question, one or two clear sentences are enough. Accept answers that use story details even if the wording is simple.
The answer key gives the correct choice for each multiple-choice question, a short quotation from the passage, and a sample written answer. This worksheet supports Common Core standards RL.1.1 (ask and answer questions about key details in a text), RL.1.2 (retell stories and demonstrate understanding of the central message), and RL.1.3 (describe characters, settings, and major events).
