About this worksheet

Every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. First graders also learn that names, days of the week, months, and the word I always get a capital letter. This first-grade worksheet practices both rules in two parts.

In Part A, children read eight sentences that are missing their end marks. They decide whether each one is a telling sentence that needs a period or an asking sentence that needs a question mark, and they write the mark in the box. In Part B, they read six sentences written all in lowercase, such as "on monday i went to the zoo." They copy each sentence on the line with capital letters in the right places.

The Part B sentences include names of people and pets, days of the week, months, and the word I, so children see that capitals are not just for the first word.

How to use it: read each Part A sentence aloud with your voice going up at the end for a question. Ask, "Is it telling or asking?" For Part B, have your child underline every word that needs a capital before rewriting. A quick checklist helps: capital at the start, capital for names and I, mark at the end.

The answer key shows the end mark for every Part A sentence and each Part B sentence written correctly. This worksheet supports Common Core standards L.1.2.a (capitalize dates and names of people) and L.1.2.b (use end punctuation for sentences). Pair it with our Nouns and Verbs worksheet for more first-grade grammar.
