About this worksheet
This second-grade reading comprehension worksheet features "Soccer Saturday," an original short story about a boy named Marco who is nervous before his first soccer game of the season. With encouragement from his coach and a teammate, Marco stays in the game, helps make a pass, and discovers that trying matters more than being perfect. The passage is about 200 words and is followed by four multiple-choice questions and one short written response.
The questions ask students to identify Marco's problem, find an important detail about the game, explain a character's action, choose a word that describes Marco at the end, and write about the lesson of the story. Students must look back at the text for proof, which strengthens close reading.
How to use it: have your child read the story once for enjoyment, then reread it before answering. Ask them to underline or point to the sentence that supports each choice. For the open response, a strong answer names the lesson and includes at least one detail, such as Marco helping a teammate even when he felt nervous.
The answer key lists each correct choice, a supporting quotation, and a sample written answer. This worksheet supports Common Core standards RL.2.1 (ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details), RL.2.3 (describe how characters respond to major events and challenges), and RL.2.2 (recount stories and determine their central message).
