Skill: Adding and subtracting four- and five-digit numbers with regrouping

10 versions, each with its own answer key
Same skill and layout, a fresh set of problems in every version, so children can keep practicing without repeating a page. Problems are not repeated between versions unless a skill has only a small number of possible problems (for example, the addition facts within 10).

About this worksheet
By fourth grade, students are expected to add and subtract large numbers fluently using the standard algorithm. The steps are the same ones they learned with smaller numbers, but longer problems give more chances for a small slip, so careful work matters. This fourth-grade worksheet gives twenty problems with four- and five-digit numbers, written in vertical form.
Problems 1 to 10 are addition, and every one needs regrouping in at least two places. Problems 11 to 20 are subtraction, and each needs at least two regroupings, too. Three of the subtraction problems have a zero in the middle of the top number, so students practice regrouping across zeros, which is one of the trickiest steps in subtraction. All sums stay below 100,000, and the ten versions never repeat a problem.
How to use it: remind students to line up the digits by place value and to work from right to left, starting with the ones. When regrouping across a zero, it helps to think of the digits as one bigger number. For example, 5,004 is 500 tens and 4 ones, which can become 499 tens and 14 ones. Encourage students to estimate first by rounding, and to check each subtraction by adding the answer to the number that was subtracted.
The answer key lists every sum and difference. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.4 (fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm).
