About this worksheet
Kindergarten addition starts with small numbers and real objects. Before children memorize facts, they need to see that putting two groups together makes a bigger group. This kindergarten worksheet gives twelve picture addition problems with sums from 1 to 5. Each problem shows a group of black dots and a group of white dots above a number sentence such as 2 + 3 = ___. Children count all the dots and write the total.
Staying within 5 matches the kindergarten fluency goal and keeps every problem countable on one hand. Three problems on each sheet add zero, so children notice that adding nothing leaves the number the same.
How to use it: let your child touch each dot while counting out loud, first the black dots and then the white ones. Ask, "How many altogether?" Small toys, cereal pieces, or fingers make a great warm-up. Once counting all feels easy, encourage counting on: start from the bigger group and count up the rest. If an answer is off by one, recount together slowly and point to each dot only once.
The answer key lists every sum. This worksheet supports Common Core standards K.OA.A.5 (fluently add and subtract within 5) and K.OA.A.1 (represent addition with objects, fingers, drawings, and equations). Ten versions give plenty of practice. When your child is ready, move on to our Number Bonds to 10 and Addition Within 10 worksheets.
