About this worksheet

Large numbers can look intimidating, but place value makes them manageable. This fourth-grade worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students find the value of a given digit in twelve seven-digit numbers, such as the value of the 8 in 9,403,785 (it is 80, because the 8 is in the tens place). In Part B, students read four numbers written in expanded form and write each one in standard form with commas.

The digits in Part A were chosen so that each one appears only once in its number, which keeps every question clear. Some questions ask about digits in small places, like tens or hundreds, and others ask about the hundred thousands or millions, so students must think carefully about every position.

How to use it: a place value chart is the best tool for this worksheet. Have students write the number into a chart with columns for millions, hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. Then the value of a digit is the digit times the value of its place. Point out that commas separate groups of three digits, which makes large numbers easier to read.

The answer key gives every digit value and standard-form number. This worksheet supports Common Core standards 4.NBT.A.2 (read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form) and 4.NBT.A.1 (recognize that a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right).
