About this worksheet
Subtraction begins with a simple story: some things go away, and you count what is left. This kindergarten worksheet gives twelve picture subtraction problems within 5. Each problem shows a row of dots with some of them crossed out, above a number sentence such as 5 - 2 = ___. Children count the dots that are not crossed out and write how many are left.
The sheet includes two facts that take away zero and two that take away every dot, such as 3 - 3, so children see that taking away nothing changes nothing and taking away everything leaves zero. The other problems take away one or more dots and always leave some behind.
How to use it: act out a few problems first with crackers, blocks, or toy cars. Put out five, take two away, and ask, "How many are left?" Explain that an X means a dot went away. Read each number sentence aloud as "five take away two is three." If your child counts every dot, including the crossed-out ones, cover those dots with a finger and count again.
The answer key lists every difference. This worksheet supports Common Core standards K.OA.A.5 (fluently add and subtract within 5) and K.OA.A.1 (represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, drawings, and equations). Ten versions give plenty of practice. Pair it with our Addition Within 5 worksheet, and move on to our Subtraction Within 10 worksheet when your child is ready.
