About this worksheet
Word problems show children how math is used in real life, and they ask students to decide what to do, not just how to compute. This second-grade worksheet gives eight original word problems with all numbers within 100. Each problem has a box of space for a drawing, a number sentence, or other work, and a line for the answer.
The problems cover the main kinds of addition and subtraction stories: adding to a group, taking from a group, putting two groups together, and comparing two amounts ("how many more"). Some problems hide the change or the starting number. For example, a child knows how many shells someone had before and after a beach trip and must find how many were found. Two problems take two steps, such as people getting off and then on a bus. Every sheet mixes the kinds, and the ten versions use new numbers and names each time.
How to use it: read each problem aloud together, then ask your child to tell the story in their own words. Ask, "Are we putting together, taking away, or comparing?" Drawing a quick picture, a number line, or a bar model helps children see what is happening. Remind them to write the unit with the answer, such as 45 stickers. For two-step problems, solve one step at a time and write each step down.
The answer key gives the answer with its unit for every problem. This worksheet supports Common Core standard 2.OA.A.1 (use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems).
