About this worksheet
Knowing the parts of speech helps students understand how sentences work and gives them the vocabulary to talk about their own writing. This fifth-grade grammar worksheet has 16 sentences, each with one word in bold. Students decide how that word is used in the sentence and write its part of speech, choosing from a word bank of all eight: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. Each part of speech appears exactly twice.
How to use it: remind students that a word's part of speech depends on its job in the sentence. Quick tests can help. A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. A pronoun takes the place of a noun. A verb shows action or being. An adjective describes a noun, and an adverb describes a verb, often telling how or when. A preposition shows a relationship, usually of place or time, such as under or across. A conjunction joins words or ideas, such as and, but, or or. An interjection shows sudden feeling and is often followed by a comma or exclamation mark.
The answer key lists the correct part of speech for every sentence. For any missed item, ask students to explain what the bold word is doing in that sentence. This worksheet supports Common Core standard L.5.1.a (explain the function of conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections in general and in particular sentences) and reviews L.3.1.a (explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
