About this worksheet

Comparing numbers helps young children understand that each number stands for an amount, and that some amounts are bigger than others. This kindergarten worksheet has two parts. In Part A, children look at six pairs of numbers and circle the number that is more. In Part B, they look at six new pairs and circle the number that is less. All numbers are between 0 and 10, and the two numbers in each pair are always different.

Switching from "more" to "less" partway through is intentional. Many children get used to always picking the bigger number, so Part B asks them to slow down, read the direction, and think again.

How to use it: if your child is unsure, ask them to show each number with fingers, blocks, or small snacks, then compare the two groups. Lining the objects up side by side makes it easy to see which group has extra. A number line or a counting chart also helps, because numbers further along the line are greater. You can also ask, "If we count, which number do we say first?" The number we say first is the smaller one.

The answer key circles the correct number in every pair. This worksheet supports Common Core standards K.CC.C.7 (compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals) and K.CC.C.6 (identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to another group).
