About this worksheet

Synonyms are words with nearly the same meaning, such as happy and glad. Antonyms are words with opposite meanings, such as hot and cold. Knowing both helps children understand stories, choose stronger words when they write, and grow vocabulary. This second-grade worksheet gives fourteen short items. Each item shows a target word and asks for either a synonym or an antonym. Children circle the best choice from three options.

The words are everyday vocabulary second graders already hear, so the focus stays on meaning relationships rather than on decoding hard spellings. Wrong choices are related but not correct, which encourages careful thinking instead of guessing the first familiar word.

How to use it: read the direction word aloud each time: synonym or antonym. Ask, "Does this mean almost the same, or the opposite?" Act out pairs for fun: stand up and sit down for up and down, or whisper and shout for quiet and noisy. If your child misses an item, make a quick T-chart of same and opposite words from the page.

The answer key lists the correct choice for every item. This worksheet supports Common Core standards L.2.5 (demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings) and L.2.4 (determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases). It pairs well with our Adjectives worksheet for richer describing words.
