About this worksheet
Sight words are the small, very common words that appear in almost every sentence children read, such as the, and, see, and can. Many of them don't follow simple phonics patterns, so recognizing them instantly helps beginning readers read more smoothly and with better understanding. This first-grade worksheet focuses on eight high-frequency words: the, and, see, can, is, my, to, and we.
How to use it: in Part 1, your child reads each word aloud and traces it, which builds the visual memory of the word. In Part 2, your child reads eight short sentences, chooses the word from the word bank that makes sense, and writes it in the blank. Remind them to reread the whole sentence afterward to check that it sounds right. If a word begins a sentence, show them that it starts with a capital letter.
The answer key lists the correct word for each sentence. If a child gets stuck, read the sentence together and try each word bank choice aloud; hearing which one makes sense is a valuable comprehension habit. This worksheet supports Common Core standard RF.1.3.g (recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words). For extra practice, write these words on sticky notes around the house and have your child read them whenever they walk by.
