About this worksheet
A plural noun names more than one person, place, or thing. Most nouns just add -s, like dog and dogs. Nouns that end in s, x, sh, or ch add -es, like box and boxes. Nouns that end in a consonant and y change the y to i and add -es, like baby and babies. This second-grade worksheet practices all three rules in Part A, where children write the plural of twelve nouns in phrases such as "one fox, two ___."
Part B covers six irregular plurals that do not follow any rule: child, foot, mouse, tooth, man, and goose. Learning them now prevents mistakes like foots and mouses.
Part A includes a few tricky words on purpose. Toy and day end in y, but the letter before the y is a vowel, so they simply add -s.
How to use it: say each word aloud. If the plural adds a new syllable, as in wishes and lunches, it usually needs -es. Make a three-column chart for -s, -es, and -ies and sort the finished words. Then read the irregular plurals together and use each one in a silly sentence.
The answer key lists every plural. This worksheet supports Common Core standards L.2.1.b (form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns) and L.2.2.d (generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words). It pairs well with our Nouns and Verbs worksheet.
